Rockefeller Institute Schedules March 11 Forum on Charter Schools

Jonas Chartock, Executive Director of SUNY Charter Schools Institute, Will Examine “Charter Schools in New York and the Nation”

Albany, N.Y. — The Rockefeller Institute of Government will launch its 2009 Public Policy Forum series with a March 11 event to discuss charter schools here and throughout the country.

Featured speaker at the “Charter Schools in New York and the Nation” forum will be Jonas S. Chartock, executive director of the State University of New York’s Charter Schools Institute. SUNY is the state’s largest charter school authorizer, with 63 charter schools approved to operate to date. The Charter Schools Institute and the Board of Trustees of SUNY were selected from among over 800 charter authorizers nationally to be featured in a 2007 report of the United States Department of Education on high quality charter authorizing.

The forum will be held at the Institute’s main facility at 411 State St., Albany. It will begin at 10:30 a.m. and end at noon.

Chartock has served as executive director of the Charter Schools Institute since August 2008. He previously served as the founding president and chief executive officer of the Charter School Policy Institute in Austin, Texas, a position he held since 2005. Prior to joining CSPI, Mr. Chartock served as executive director of Teach For America in Houston, Texas. He began his professional career as a teacher through Teach For America in the Compton Unified School District in Compton, California. He holds an Ed.M. in School Leadership from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education; an M.A. in Education: Curriculum and Instruction from Chapman University; a B.S. in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations; and is completing Ed.D. studies at the University of Texas at Austin.

This will be the third in a series of Rockefeller Institute forums on charter schools. A fourth forum is planned for June. Transcripts of two previous forums, in March 2007, and February 2008, are available in the “Forums and Events” section of the Institute’s Web site, www.rockinst.org.

To register for the March 11 event, please contact Michele Charbonneau of the Rockefeller Institute at 518-443-5258, or e-mail her at charbonm@rockinst.org.
