Rockefeller Institute of Government to Co-Host National Conference on Government Assistance During Turbulent Economic Times

Institute Joins New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance to Host National Association for Welfare Research and Statistics Workshop in July

Albany, N.Y. — Some of the nation’s foremost experts on programs designed to help people through tough times will assemble here July 12-15 to discuss the impact of the worsening economy on the nation’s “safety net.”

The National Association for Welfare Research and Statistics’ (NAWRS) 49th annual workshop will be held in Albany this summer. A primary goal of this year’s meeting will be to examine how safety net programs in the U.S. are faring under the strains of the economic recession and in the aftermath of major policy changes, including the federal stimulus package. The meeting will also assess the implications of these changes for the federal-state partnership in social policy.

The workshop will cover a wide range of government assistance programs, including income supports, human services, health care, efforts to reduce inequality, education and training, labor programs, and child welfare policies. NAWRS meetings are open to all persons interested in such policies. Previous meetings have drawn officials from federal, state, and local governments, researchers from universities and think tanks, as well as practitioners and policy advocates from nonprofit and for-profit organizations.

Workshop sessions will address the economic outlook, implementation of the federal stimulus plan, the effects of economic downturns and public policies on people, and ways of reducing persistent poverty. International perspectives will come from sessions covering progress in the United Kingdom’s efforts to eliminate child poverty and recent work by the Organization for Cooperation and Development (OECD) on poverty and disability policy in OECD countries. State responses and developments will be covered in a series of roundtable discussions featuring administrators and policy analysts.

The meeting, which will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Albany, is co-sponsored by the Rockefeller Institute of Government and the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance. Questions as well as proposals for papers or sessions should be sent to programchair@nawrs.org or directly to the program committee co-chairs: Rockefeller Institute Co-Director Thomas Gais at gaist@rockinst.org, or Michael Wiseman at wisemanm@gwu.edu.
