Highlights


• 3.2 million students were enrolled in public and nonpublic elementary and secondary schools in Fall 2005, nearly one-quarter below the peak enrollment of 4.3 million in 1970.
  
• Brooklyn (Kings County) had the highest 2005 public school enrollment in New York, and also accounted for over 22 percent of students in nonpublic schools in the State.
  
• New York's public elementary and secondary schools had 270,773 classroom teachers serving 2.8 million students in 2005, compared to 188,817 teachers serving 3.5 million students in 1970.
  
• New York's public elementary and secondary schools spent $43.2 billion in 2005, financed by property taxes and other local moneys (50.4%), State aid (43%), and Federal aid (6.2%).
  
• There were 809 thousand full-time and 344 thousand part-time students in degree-credit enrollments in New York's higher education institutions in 2006.
  
• Nearly 321 thousand students received State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) aid in the 2006-07 year, down 2.86 percent from 2005-06.
• The 6,952 libraries in New York had over 212 million volumes and nearly 12,000 professional staff in 2005. Colleges and universities accounted for under 4 percent of the libraries but over 36 percent of the volumes.
