    Highlights

  • Per capita expenditures by New York State and its local governments has increased 38 percent from $8,233 in 1996-97 to $11,344 in 2003-04.
  • New York State had $106.3 billion in total receipts in fiscal year 2004.
  • New York State collected $20.7 billion in personal income tax in fiscal year 2006, up approximately $2 billion, or 10 percent, from fiscal year 2005.
  • New York State collected $931 million in cigarette taxes in fiscal year 2006, down approximately $5 million, or 46 percent, from fiscal year 2005.
  • New York State collected $2.3 billion in lottery revenue on approximately $6.6 billion of lottery sales in fiscal year 2007.
  • New York State paid $194 million in rent for approximately 12 million square feet of leased space during the 2006-07 fiscal year.
  • New York State had approximately $48.4 billion in state-related debt in fiscal year 2007, up $9.5 billion, or approximately 24 percent, since fiscal year 2001.
  • The New York State public employee retirement systems held $142 billion in net assets as of March 31, 2006.
  • New York had approximately 162 thousand state government employees in January 2007.
