Highlights

There were 3,176 local government units in New York State in 2005, including cities, counties, towns, villages, school districts, and fire districts.
New York State local governments raised $124 billion in revenues in 2005, with $37 billion, or approximately 30 percent, from real property taxes and assessments.
New York State local government expenditures were over $131 billion in 2005, up approximately $32 billion, or 32.4 percent, since 2000.
New York State local governments spent $34.6 billion on education, approximately 34 percent of their total general purpose expenditures.
New York State local governments issued over $12 billion in new bonds in 2005, and ended the year with over $63 billion in outstanding bonds.
Over $2.6 billion in lottery aid was distributed to education in New York State during the 2006-07 fiscal year.
There were approximately 615 thousand positions under local civil service administration in New York State as of December 31, 2006.
