    Highlights

  • There were 889 banking and lending institutions in New York State as of the end of 2006, down from 955 the year before.
  • Over $11 trillion worth of life insurance was in force in New York State in 2004, a 66.2 percent increase from 1994.
  • Almost $31.1 billion in premiums were paid to property/casualty insurers in New York State in 2003, a 41 percent increase from 1999.
  • There were 5.3 million New Yorkers in health maintenance organizations in 2004, down from 5.9 million in 2002.
  • There were 411 billion shares, worth $14.4 trillion, traded on the New York Stock Exchange in 2005; this is over ten times as many shares as were traded on the NYSE in 1990.
