    Highlights

  • There were approximately 54,000 full-time uniformed police in New York State in 2006. Sixty-seven percent were employed by the New York City Police Department.
  • The crime rate in New York State was 2,464.0 per 100,000 population in 2006. This includes murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft.
  • There were approximately 4.3 million filings in New York State trial courts in 2005.
  • There were 63,536 inmates in state correctional facilities in November 2006. Over 95 percent of the inmates were men.
  • Over 85 percent of all discrimination complaints filed in New York State in fiscal year 2006-07 were employment related.
  • There were 1.2 million fire department calls in New York State in 2005, including fires, rescue/EMS, and false alarms; about 90,000 of these calls were for fires.
