    Highlights

  • There were 3,178 local government units in New York State in 2006, including cities, counties, towns, villages, school districts, and fire districts.
  • New York State local governments raised $130 billion in revenues in 2006, with $39.6 billion, or 30.5 percent, from real property taxes and assessments.
  • New York State local government expenditures were $139.6 billion in 2006, up $31.4 billion, since 2001.
  • New York State local governments spent $36.5 billion on education in 2006, or 31 percent of their total general purpose expenditures.
  • New York State local governments issued over $9 billion in new bonds in 2006, and ended the year with over $66 billion in outstanding bonds.
  • Over $2.7 billion in lottery aid was distributed to education in New York State during the 2007-08 fiscal year.
  • There were over 629 thousand positions under local government civil service administration in New York State as of December 31, 2007.
