• Close to 3.2 million students were enrolled in public and nonpublic elementary and secondary schools in Fall 2006, nearly one-quarter below the peak enrollment of 4.3 million in 1970
  
• Brooklyn (Kings County) had the highest 2006 public school enrollment in New York, and accounted for 23 percent of students in nonpublic schools in the State.
  
• New York’s public elementary and secondary schools had 227,805 classroom teachers serving over 2.7 million students in 2006 compared to 188,817 teachers serving 3.5 million students in 1970.
  
• New York’s public elementary and secondary schools spent $46.3 billion in 2006, financed by property taxes and other local revenues (50.5%), State aid (43%), and Federal aid (6.2
  
• There were 826.5 thousand full-time and 343 thousand part-time students in degree-credit enrollments in New York’s higher education institutions in 2007.
  
• Nearly 321 thousand students received State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) aid in the 2006-07 year, down 2.86 percent from 2005-06.
  
• The 6,595 libraries in New York had over 245 million volumes and nearly 12,000 professional staff in 2006. Colleges and universities accounted for under 4 percent of the libraries but over 36 percent of the volumes.
