    Information on the environment and the outdoors in New York State — including State parks and other commercial or public recreation; hunting and fishing; forest management; air, land, and water pollution; earthquakes; and mineral resources.

    Highlights

  • New York’s 214 State parks and historic sites were visited more than 53 million times in the 2007 fiscal year
  • There were 211 forest fires in New York in 2007, down from 231 in 2006
  • The 223 rescue missions conducted by the Department of Environmental Conservation in 2006 consumed 8,964 staff hours, considerably less than the 15,708 in 2006, when 226 missions were conducted
  • There were 37 hunting accidents in 2007, up from 21 in 2006, the lowest number since 1940
  • There were 43 active solid waste disposal sites in 2007, compared to 861 in 1970.
  • There were 856 inactive hazardous waste disposal sites in 2008; 504 of these were class 2 sites.
