    Highlights

  • There were 54,518 full-time uniformed police in New York State in 2008. Sixty-seven percent were employed by the New York City Police Department.
  • The crime rate in New York State was 2,373.6 per 100,000 population in 2007. This includes murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft.
  • There were approximately 4.6 million filings in New York State trial courts in 2008.
  • There were 60,565 inmates in state correctional facilities in November 2008. Over 95 percent of the inmates were men.
  • Eighty-two percent of all discrimination complaints filed in New York State in fiscal year 2008-09 were employment related.
  • There were over 1.5 million fire department calls in New York State in 2007, including fires, rescue/EMS, and false alarms; 85,002 of these calls were for fires.
