    Highlights

  • Close to 3.150 million students were enrolled in public and nonpublic elementary and secondary schools in Fall 2007, nearly one-quarter below the peak enrollment of 4.3 million in 1970.
  • New York’s public elementary and secondary schools had 229,896 classroom teachers serving over 2.7 million students in 2007 compared to 188,817 teachers serving 3.5 million students in 1970.
  • New York’s public elementary and secondary schools spent $48.7 billion in 2007, financed by property taxes and other local revenues (51%), State aid (44%), and Federal aid (5%).
  • There were close to 847,000 full-time and over 346,000 part-time students in degree-credit enrollments in New York’s higher education institutions in 2008.
  • There were 439,523 students enrolled in the 64 campuses of the State University of New York (SUNY), in the Fall 2008.
  • An estimated 313,380 students received State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) aid in the 2008-09 year, up 1.4 percent from 2007-08.
  • The 6,632 libraries in New York had over 222 million volumes and over 11,000 professional staff in 2008. Colleges and universities accounted for under 4 percent of the libraries but over 39 percent of the volumes.
