    Highlights

  • Approximately 2.6 million patients were discharged from hospitals in New York State in 2007.
  • Close to 7,000 New Yorkers were admitted to state psychiatric centers in fiscal year 2007-08.
  • Over 300,000 people were admitted to substance abuse treatment in New York in 2006. Approximately 33 percent were 35 to 44 years of age.
  • Close to 650,000 New Yorkers received over $4 billion in Supplemental Security Income in 2007.
  • The average monthly number of Medicaid beneficiaries in New York was 4,159,722 in 2008, an increase of approximately 53,000 from 2007. Sixty-eight percent of the recipients lived in New York City.
  • Over 1.8 million New Yorkers received close to $2.4 billion in Food Stamp benefits in 2007.
  • There were 26,334 children in foster care in New York State on December 31, 2007, a decrease of 3.2 percent when compared to December 31, 2006.
