  • There were over 10.6 million motor vehicles registered in New York State in 2007 with 83.5 percent of these passenger vehicles. Suffolk County had the highest number of registered motor vehicles at 1,211,842.
  • There were 323,106 motor vehicle accidents in 2007, up 19,3 percent from the year before. The 1,220 fatalities from these accidents represented a decrease compared to 2006, with 1,330 fatalities.
  • Town roads accounted for more than one-half of the 114,495 miles of highways in New York in 2008.
  • Of the 19,521 bridges in New York as of April 2008, 6,281 were rated as deficient or were closed, down from 6,288 in the previous year.
  • There were 143.6 million vehicle trips on the New York State Thruway in 2008, with nearly 9 percent entering at the Washington Avenue barrier (Exit 24) in Albany.
  • New York’s public transit systems provided 2.8 billion rides for individuals, covering a total of 776 million miles, in 2008.
  • There were over 45 million passenger enplanements in New York State in 2007, more than three-quarters of which were at J.F.K. and LaGuardia airports.
