    Information on the environment and the outdoors in New York State — including State parks and other commercial or public recreation; hunting and fishing; forest management; air, land, and water pollution; earthquakes; and mineral resources.


  • New York’s 213 State parks and historic sites received 54 million visitors in the 2008-09 fiscal year.
  • There were 157 forest fires in New York in 2008, down from 211 in 2007.
  • The 245 rescue missions conducted by the Department of Environmental Conservation in 2008 consumed 14,094 staff hours, considerably more than the 8,964 in 2007, when 223 missions were conducted.
  • There were 27 hunting accidents reported in 2008, down from 37 in 2007.
  • There were 46 active solid waste disposal sites in 2009, compared to 861 in 1970.
  • There were 872 inactive hazardous waste disposal sites in 2009.
  • The volume of suspended particulates annually dispersed into the atmosphere in New York has declined by more than two-thirds since 1965.
