    Highlights

  • Direct expenditures by New York's state and local governments totaled $10,468 per capita, 33 percent above the national average in fiscal year 2007-08.
  • Taxes have represented roughly 43 to 49 percent of New York State's total receipts in recent years, a significant decline from proprtions of well over 50 percent during the 1980s.
  • New York State collected $22.6 billion in personal income tax in fiscal year 2009-10, down $546 million, or 2.4 percent from 2008-09.
  • New York State collected close to $1.3 billion in cigarette taxes in fiscal year 2008-09, up $362 million, or 39 percent, from fiscal year 2007-08.
  • New York State collected $2.6 billion in lottery revenue on $6.8 billion of lottery sales in fiscal year 2009-10.
  • New York State paid $230 million in rent for approximately 13.8 million square feet of leased space during the 2009-10 fiscal year.
  • The New York State public employee retirement systems held $110.9 billion in net assets as of March 31, 2009.
