    Highlights

  • Close to 3.112 million students were enrolled in public and nonpublic elementary and secondary schools in Fall 2008, nearly one-quarter below the peak enrollment of 4.3 million in 1970.
  • New York’s public elementary and secondary schools had 230,894 classroom teachers serving over 2.6 million students in 2008 compared to 188,817 teachers serving 3.5 million students in 1970.
  • New York’s public elementary and secondary schools spent $48.7 billion in 2007, financed by property taxes and other local revenues (51%), State aid (44%), and Federal aid (5%).
  • There were 891,104 full-time and over 357,721 part-time students in degree-credit enrollments in New York’s higher education institutions in 2009.
  • There were 461,519 students enrolled in the 64 campuses of the State University of New York (SUNY) in the Fall 2009.
  • An estimated 330,110 students received State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) aid in the year 2009-10, up 5.3 percent from 2008-09.
  • The 6,722 libraries in New York had over 228 million volumes and over 12,000 professional staff in 2009. Colleges and universities accounted for under 4.2 percent of the libraries but over 39 percent of the volumes.
