    Highlights

  • Approximately 2.6 million patients were discharged from hospitals in New York State in 2008, a slight increase over the previous year.
  • Close to 7,900 New Yorkers were admitted to state psychiatric centers in fiscal year 2009-10.
  • Over 300,000 people were admitted to substance abuse treatment in New York in 2009. Over 26 percent were 35 to 44 years of age.
  • Over 650,000 New Yorkers received a total of more than $4 billion in Supplemental Security Income in 2008.
  • The average monthly number of Medicaid beneficiaries in New York was close to 4.5 million in 2009, an increase of approximately 273,000 from 2008. Sixty-five percent of the recipients lived in New York City.
  • Over 2 million New Yorkers received a total of approximately $2.8 billion in Food Stamp benefits in 2008.
  • There were 25,510 children in foster care in New York State on December 31, 2008, a 3.2 percent decrease compared to December 31, 2007.
