    Highlights

  • There were over 10.7 million motor vehicles registered in New York State in 2008 with 83.9 percent of these passenger vehicles. Among individual counties, Suffolk County had the highest number of registered motor vehicles at 1,212,578.
  • There were 316,231 motor vehicle accidents in 2008, down 2.1 percent from the year before. The 1,160 fatalities from these accidents represented a decrease compared to 2007, with 1,220 fatalities.
  • Town roads accounted for more than one-half of the 114,546 miles of highways in New York in 2009.
  • Of the 19,524 bridges in New York as of April 2010, 6,244 were rated as deficient and 118 were closed.
  • There were 144.9 million vehicle trips on the New York State Thruway in 2009, with nearly 9.2 percent entering at the Washington Avenue barrier (Exit 24) in Albany.
  • New York’s public transit systems provided 2.8 billion rides for individuals, covering a total of 792 million miles, in 2009.
  • There were over 42 million passenger enplanements in New York State in 2009, more than three-quarters of which were at J.F.K. and LaGuardia airports.
