    Highlights

  • Close to 3.093 million students were enrolled in public and nonpublic elementary and secondary schools in Fall 2009, nearly one-quarter below the peak enrollment of 4.3 million in 1970.
  • New York’s public elementary and secondary schools had 225,624 classroom teachers serving over 2.6 million students in 2009 compared to 188,817 teachers serving 3.5 million students in 1970.
  • New York’s public elementary and secondary schools spent $54.1 billion in 2009.
  • There were 911,768 full-time and over 360,793 part-time students in degree-credit enrollments in New York’s higher education institutions in 2010.
  • There were 471,187 students enrolled in the 64 campuses of the State University of New York (SUNY) in the Fall of 2010.
  • An estimated 309,540 students received State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) aid in the year 2010-11, down from 330,379 from 2009-10.
  • The 6,630 libraries in New York had over 224 million volumes and over 11,642 professional staff in 2010. Colleges and universities accounted for under 4.1 percent of the libraries but over 39 percent of the volumes.
