    Highlights

  • Approximately 2.6 million patients were discharged from hospitals in New York State in 2009, a slight increase over the previous year.
  • Close to 7,700 New Yorkers were admitted to state psychiatric centers in fiscal year 2010-11.
  • Over 311,000 people were admitted to substance abuse treatment in New York in 2010. Over 23 percent were 35 to 44 years of age.
  • Over 660,000 New Yorkers received a total of more than $4.5 billion in Supplemental Security Income in 2009.
  • The average monthly number of Medicaid beneficiaries in New York was close to 4.0 million in 2010, an increase of approximately 259,000 from 2009. Sixty-six percent of the recipients lived in New York City.
  • Over 2.5 million New Yorkers received a total of approximately $4.3 billion in Food Stamp benefits in 2009.
  • There were 23,182 children in foster care in New York State on December 31, 2010, a 9.1 percent decrease compared to December 31, 2008.
