    Highlights

  • The crime rate in New York State was 2,295.6 per 100,000 population in 2011. This includes murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft.
  • There were 554 incidents of hate crimes in New York State in 2011, down from 703 in 2010.
  • There were approximately 4.2 million filings in New York State trial courts in 2011.
  • There were 56,466 inmates in state correctional facilities as of March 31, 2011.
  • 82 percent of all discrimination complaints filed in New York State in fiscal year 2010-11 were employment related.
  • There were almost 605 thousand emergency calls in New York State in 2012, including fires, overpressure ruptures, rescue/EMS, false alarms, and other; 35,872 of these calls were for fires. This was down from 1.8 million emergency calls in 2010.
