    Highlights

  • Close to 2.988 million students were enrolled in public and nonpublic elementary and secondary schools in Fall 2013, over one-quarter below the peak enrollment of 4.3 million in 1970.
  • New York’s public elementary and secondary schools had 206,548 classroom teachers serving over 2.6 million students in 2013 compared to 188,817 teachers serving 3.5 million students in 1970.
  • New York’s public elementary and secondary schools spent $58.1 billion in 2012.
  • There were 900,773 full-time and 372,773 part-time students in degree-credit enrollments in New York’s higher education institutions in 2012.
  • There were approximately 462,563 students enrolled in the sixty-four campuses of the State University of New York (SUNY) in the Fall of 2012.
  • An estimated 305,381 students received State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) aid in the year 2012-13, down from 310,983 from 2011-12.
  • The New York State Archives contained 139,028 cubic feet of holdings in 2013 and fielded 41,176 research inquiries.
