    Highlights

  • In 2010, there were 36,000 farms in New York, down from 36,400 in 2007.
  • Leading vegetable crops for fresh market use in 2012 were cabbage, cauliflower, cucumbers, onions (summer storage), pumpkins, snap beans, squash, and sweet corn.
  • New York’s 610,000 milk cows produced over 1.1 billion pounds of milk in December 2012, or 1,830 pounds per cow.
  • Apple production totaled 720 million pounds in 2012, down from 1,220 million pounds in 2011.
  • New York’s egg-laying chicken population was almost 4.5 million at the end of 2012; they produced over 1.3 billion eggs during the year, for an average of 292 eggs per chicken.
