    Highlights

  • Direct expenditures by New York's state and local governments totaled $15,522 per capita, over 50 percent above the national average in fiscal year 2011-12.
  • Taxes have represented roughly 43 to 49 percent of New York State's total receipts in recent years, a significant decline from proportions of well over 50 percent during the 1980s.
  • New York State collected $28.9 billion in personal income tax in fiscal year 2013-14.
  • New York State collected close to $1.35 billion in cigarette taxes in fiscal year 2013-14, down slightly from fiscal year 2012-13.
  • New York State collected $3.1 billion in lottery revenue on $7.3 billion of lottery sales in fiscal year 2014-15.
  • New York State paid $239 million in rent for approximately 12.8 million square feet of leased space during the 2014-15 fiscal year.
  • The New York State public employee retirement systems held $181.3 billion in net assets as of March 31, 2014.
