    Highlights

  • In 2014, there were 35,500 farms in New York, down from 36,000 in 2010.
  • Leading vegetable crops for fresh market use in 2014 were cabbage, cauliflower, cucumbers, onions (summer storage), pumpkins, snap beans, squash, sweet corn, and tomatoes.
  • New York’s 615,000 milk cows produced almost 1.2 billion pounds of milk in December 2014, or 1,890 pounds per cow.
  • Apple production totaled 1,295 million pounds in 2014, down from 1,410 million pounds in 2013.
  • New York’s egg-laying chicken population was about 5 million at the end of 2014; they produced over 1.5 billion eggs during the year, for an average of 296 eggs per chicken.
